This is a bit of a hard choice really 
I chose sword, but it's half and half between both the sword and crossbow. Sword is handy because (1) no need to recharge ammo, just take care of the weapon (2) depending on the kind, light weight (3) you can use it for other things as well. But the crossbow/compound is good too because (1)you do not need to be close to your target to use it (2) ammo (depending on the kind) can be picked up and used again (3) relatively lightweight.
Both have their pros and cons, but I would used both. And I own each of those kinds, so I'm all set for the zombie apocalypse!
